Winter Queer Program
January 6 – 19, 2007

For all gays and lesbians interested in learning about the real situation of g/l life in Mexico through the study of the language and cultural exchange.

INCLUDES:

* Classes:
Intensive Spanish language instruction integrating texts and discussions to supplement program focus, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students are evaluated and placed at the appropriate level with a maximum of five students in each class. All levels welcome, from beginners to advanced.

* Cultural Activities
Guest speakers, lectures and roundtable discussions, field trips, museum visits, videos, and encounters with local community groups afford participants an understanding of the cultural context of gay and lesbian identity in Mexico.

Topics/Activities may include:

  • Visits with artists, activists, and community leaders
  • History of the gay/lesbian movement in Mexico and Latin America
  • The culture of Mexico and gender roles in contemporary Mexican society
  • A cooking class
  • A weekend excursion trip
  • Politics and the recent elections
  • Dancing class
  • Human rights
  • AIDS in Mexico
  • Chiapas and Zapatismo
  • Metropolitan Church
  • NAFTA, globalization and "neoliberalism" in Mexico
  • Weekend excursion to Xochicalco mons and Taxco silver mining town.

Note: All program activities are in Spanish with English translation when necessary.

* Homestay
We offer homestays with gays and lesbians in Cuernavaca community. All CETLALIC families are gay and lesbian friendly. Sharing with a Mexican Family provides a vibrant sense of the Mexican people and makes the course more personal and more profound. It also provides participants with ample opportunity to practice Spanish in everyday situations.

Note: hotel or apartment accomodations are also available if you prefer.
