Opening
Doors: September Gay and Lesbian Program
September 6 - 19, 2008
For all gays
and lesbians interested in learning about the G/L life in Mexico
today.
This 2-week
program is meant for all gay and lesbians who are interested in
learning about the G/L life in Mexico today. As Mexico's Independent's
Day is celebrated during the program, we also focus on important
issues like Independence, Colonialism and Neocolonialism, the Zapatista
movement and the social situation in Mexico today.
This
program includes:
Daily intensive
Spanish language instruction in a schedule from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00
p.m., Monday to Friday. Students are placed in classes at the appropriate
skill level with a maximum of five students.
The afternoon
'práctica' from 12:20 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., includes classes
focusing on G/L vocabulary and reading texts and discussing G/L
items on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays
we will visit different organizations and invite people to come
and tell about their experiences.
Three times
a week there is an extra activity in the afternoon or evening. We
meet artists, activists and community leaders and learn about the
history of the G/L movement in Mexico and Latin America. We share
coming out stories with Mexican men and women and learn about the
culture of Mexico and gender roles in contemporary Mexican society.
We learn, laugh, talk and cook together and take the time to share
our own experiences.
We also focus
on the history and actuality of Mexico, its struggle for independence,
problems of colonialism and neocolonialism and the Zapatista movement.
We participate in the Fiesta de la Independencia in the center of
the city of Cuernavaca, where thousands of people meet for 'El Grito',
the shout of independence, and to celebrate their Mexican identity.
Roundtable discussions,
guest speakers, field trips, museum visits, videos and encounters
with local groups and individuals give the participants the chance
to live a real Mexican experience.
All program
activities are in Spanish with translation if necessary.
Note: CETLALIC
operates yearround. Students can expand their Spanish language study
either before or after program dates.
Homestay
with a Mexican family
The experience
of sharing daily life with a family provides a vibrant sense of
the Mexican people and makes the program more personal and profound.
It also provides participants with ample opportunity to practice
Spanish in everyday situations. We do our best to find a gay or
lesbian homestay for the participants of this program, but all our
families are gay and lesbian friendly. (Hotel or apartment accommodations
are also available if you prefer.)
Cost: US $1,140
Full room (shared)
and board in a Mexican home, two weeks of intensive Spanish instruction,
educational materials, cultural activities, local excursions in
the Cuernavaca area and one excursion on Saturday. Cost does not
include round trip air fare to Mexico City, nor transportation from
