In/Visibility:
Lesbian Lives in Mexico
June 21 - July 12, 2008
Learn about
the growing lesbian and gay movement toward visibility and empowerment
in Mexico. Discover how Latin American women integrate a lesbian
lifestyle with Latino cultural traditions. Gain access to Mexican
culture in a way that validates your own experience. Laugh, dance,
play, and share stories with Mexican lesbians. Express your solidarity
with Latin American lesbians and help strengthen ties between women
worldwide.
INCLUDES:
Classes:
Intensive language instruction, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday. Students are evaluated and placed at the appropriate level
with a maximum of five students in each class.
Activities
on the Lesbian Movement and Mexican Culture:
Lectures and roundtable discussions, field trips, museum visits,
and encounters with community groups are scheduled during the afternoon.
Topics addressed may include:
- History of
the lesbian and gay movement in Mexico,
- Coming out
stories of Mexican lesbians,
- Lesbians
in the workplace,
- Lesbian mothers,
- Lesbians
and the Catholic church,
- Non-traditional
families, and
- Lesbians
in the arts.
Note: All
program activities are in Spanish with English translation when
necessary.
Weekend Excursions
- Xochicalco
ruins and Taxco silver mining town
- Mexico City,
including participation in the "Marcha del Orgullo"
the 25th. Annual Pride March as well as visits to downtown and
the Frida Kahlo Museum and Coyoacan.
Homestay
With Mexican lesbians or lesbian-friendly families provides a vibrant
sense of the Mexican people and makes the course more personal and
profound.It also provides participants with ample opportunity to
practice Spanish in everyday situations.
