For all people interested in multicultural societies and in the culture and struggle of indigenous people in Mexico and the Americas.

In Mexico multiculturalism is a fact. For centuries diverse groups of people have been living in the same country. But do they really live together? This question is the focus of a special program of CETLALIC. During a week in Cuernavaca and a week of travel, we will learn about the different groups. We will see the influence of the culture of the indigenous peoples on the culture of the mestizos and vice versa throughout history until today. We will also learn how other groups like Germans, Lebanese, Jews, Chinese, Spanish and Afromexicans integrate in Mexican society. Lastly, we will learn about the cultural heritage of Aztecs, Nahua and other indigenous peoples and Mexicans today.

Everywhere in the world multiculturalism is a “hot issue”. In Mexico different cultures have been living together for centuries. Talking with people from the different cultures and basic organizations makes us think about our own ideas and about the possibilities, problems and the cultural wealth of these communities. Additionally, we will be in Chiapas to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Uprising of the Zapatista Movement of January 1st.

INCLUDES:

*1 week in Cuernavaca
Daily intensive Spanish language instruction from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students are placed in classes at the appropriate skill level with a maximum of five students. We accept students of all levels.
