For all interested in learning about popular and cultural
struggles in Mexico and how the Mexican grassroots organize against
neoliberalism and globalization.
* Classes:
Intensive Spanish language instruction integrating
texts and discussions to supplement program focus, 9:00 a.m. to
12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students are evaluated and placed
at the appropriate level with a maximum of five students in each
class. All levels welcome, from beginners to advanced.
* Cultural Activities:
Guest speakers, lectures and roundtable discussions,
field trips, museum visits, videos, and encounters with local community
groups afford participants an understanding of the cultural context
of resistance in Mexico. Discussions and site visits regarding Social
Movements and Popular Resistance in Mexico 12:30-2:00 and 5-7 p.m.
Topics/activities may include:
- Visits with artists, activists, and community
leaders
- Visit with a traditional healer
- Understanding the current situation for campesinos
- Women and social change
- Politics and the recent elections
- Dancing class
- Human rights
- Chiapas and Zapatismo
- NAFTA, globalization and "neoliberalism"
in Mexico
Note: All program activities are in Spanish
with English translation when necessary.

Homestay
Homestays with Mexican families provide a vibrant
sense of the Mexican people and makes the course more personal and
profound. It also provides participants with ample opportunity to
practice Spanish in everyday situations. We offer homestays with
gays and lesbians in the Cuernavaca community. All CETLALIC families
are gay and lesbian friendly. (Note: hotel or apartment accommodations
are also available upon request.)
Note: CSU Northridge is
responsible only for providing instruction and appropriate academic
credit.
